Harpenden

Situated midway between St Albans and Luton, this charming commuter town is rich in amenities and easy to get to, yet is surrounded by countryside and retains much of its original character.

First recorded in an 11th century deed in which Edward the Confessor granted an estate to Westminster Abbey (as Herpendene), it was the coming of the railway in the late 19th century that really spurred the growth of the town.

Perhaps Harpenden's greatest claim to fame is the Rothamsted Manor and its Agricultural Research Centre, founded by Sir John Bennet Lawes.
